Chi Cheng

Chi Cheng (1970–2013) was an American musician best known as the bassist for the alternative metal band Deftones. Born in Sacramento, California, he joined the band in 1988, contributing to their distinctive sound that blends elements of metal, shoegaze, and post-hardcore. Cheng's work can be heard on several of Deftones' critically acclaimed albums, including "Adrenaline" (1995), "Around the Fur" (1997), "White Pony" (2000), and "Diamond Eyes" (2010). His dynamic bass lines and innovative approach to rhythm significantly shaped the band's identity, earning them a dedicated fan base and influencing a generation of musicians within the nu-metal and post-metal scenes. Cheng was also known for his introspective lyrics and his ability to convey emotion through music. In 2008, Cheng was involved in a severe car accident that left him in a coma, impacting his ability to perform. Despite this, the Deftones continued to honor his legacy, and Cheng's contributions to the band remain highly regarded. His tragic passing in 2013 brought attention to the importance of mental health and recovery in the music community. Cheng's influence endures through the Deftones' ongoing success and innovation in the genre.
